CHARACTER
Character Name: Kyrie Sumadera (Kyrie Ushiromiya during regular canon)
Canon: Umineko no Naku Koro Ni
Age: 18 (about 44 during regular canon)
Timeline: Pre-canon, before university
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A

Personality:
Later in life, Kyrie has a very big problem with jealousy, mainly because of Rudolf's cheating. But, earlier in life she certainly felt the beginnings of it. She resents Kasumi for being spoiled and thinks of her as a brat. Not only that, but she envies her position. Being so carefree, she would give anything to trade places with her. Why does she have to be the one with the responsibilities of the headship, what difference would it make if it were Kasumi's job instead? Why should she suffer. As much as she hates her mother, she may even hate Kasumi more, for being some false hope. It could have just as easily been Kyrie in that position. Their mother may be the hardest on her, but Kyrie is smart enough to easily realise it's both out of duty, and having had much the same treatment, a sense of schadenfreude. Something she can easily understand. If anything bad happens to Kasumi, Kyrie revels in it. Finally, she's gotten just a bit of what's coming to her.

The only family member she does like is her father, who is kind to her, even tries to help her sneak a bit of freedom. Whether it's covering for her while she runs off for a bit to get a break, or bringing her some sort of entertainment or treat. She's already vowed that when she has children of her own - though she doesn't want to, she knows she'll have to - she'll let them do as they please without any interference, to avoid the same pain as her. And that is exactly how she treats her children eventually, with almost no parenting at all to contrast her own upbringing.

As the result of her training and environment, she's cold and calculating. She's been taught to be selfish, to simply take what she needs without thinking of the needs of others. She's supposed to put the family above everything else. But, in her resentment, she's become wreckless and rebellious, and cares very little for the interests of the family. Although she knows exactly how she needs to present herself to others, as someone deeply concerned with her responsibilities to those in the family, as a friendly and caring person to those outside of it, etc. She can easily adapt to acting however she thinks people want her to act, so she won't be found out. After all, if she outright said she wanted to leave or didn't care, she would be punished severely. And if she exposed her selfishness to most regular people, they would hate her and she would be forced to stay the Sumadera head, having no other options. Many of the things she says are carefully masked insults or manipulative. It’s funny, because she is usually portrayed as being quite frank – and that IS true to an extent, if it doesn’t matter whether she’s ‘found out’, she will certainly speak exactly her mind or reveal her true nature. She is very forthcoming with information in a business sense, mostly. She will voice her intentions without any fuss in a business, meeting, debate, conference or negotiation type setting. Her opinions on people, the way she feels in regard to jealousy or selfishness, those will all remain quiet for the most part. She doesn’t really like anyone (in fact, quite often, she hates them, people in general get on her nerves, if not for thinking them to be idiots, then for envying them). Everything else is a means to that end, she is incredibly selfish and will do anything to get what she wants without regard for anyone. Everything exists for her gain, even other people’s lives, whether that means sacrificing one or creating one, if it will help her, she won’t think twice about it. She feels no guilt for any of it, she has no doubts when she acts – she carefully thinks it through to make sure of that, and what is there to doubt when you feel no guilt?

As per EP4 ‘Krauss five’, when everyone else in the group is sniped by the Siestas, she loses it. It seems she’s about to start screaming and crying in much the same way in EP3 when Rudolf is killed, but she’s killed before she can do much, and she also loses her head in EP6 with Jessica. She certainly wants to keep living, but she has also brought it on herself at times, it’s more that she has to face death alone, outside her own terms. She wants to be in control of everything in her life. Similar to wanting to be in control, Kyrie has a lot of pride. She gets cocky once she appears to have the upperhand, and can’t run away or admit to being wrong once she’s started. Especially if she’s mocked the other person, she’ll only continue despite realizing how it will hurt her cause. In EP6 when she finally gains ground against Jessica, she starts to get cocky thinking her victory is guaranteed, only to take flaunting that too far and end up being the cause of her own death. In EP7 she eggs Eva on despite everything which only riles Eva up more and again, ensures her death. Even when she was dating Rudolf, she became complacent and assumed he wouldn’t stray from her, even in knowing his nature. This is the reason he went to Asumu so easily.

Kyrie is known for being highly intelligent, she’s quick-thinking, reliable, wise and can find a way out of nearly any situation. Even in the face of great danger, she can remain calm and collected. Her specialty is predicting and reading others’ actions. Chessboard thinking is her coined term, or ‘flip the chessboard over’ – it basically amounts to putting oneself in the other person’s place and determining what they would see as the best course of action, which she can then use against them.

Because of her adaptable manner and intelligence, and beginnings of sense of humour, she's popular among those who work within the yakuza group. They respect her to the point of doing favours for her even after she's left the family. When the family begins to fall apart under Kasumi's leadership after Kyrie has died, they vie for her daughter to take over, believing someone raised by Kyrie would be a good leader.

History:
Kyrie was born during WWII into the Sumadera family, a powerful yakuza syndicate based in Kyoto. Traditionally, the eldest daughter of the head is the one to become the heir, and that's Kyrie. Her mother is the current head and she is often the one to teach Kyrie in turn. Until she was of school age, generally servants and her father looked after her, as her mother was both too busy to do it, and simply didn't care to. Her parents had been an arranged marriage, and didn't get along well, as her father was seen by most in the family to be too soft and generally hated. Throughtout her life, her father is the only relative she likes, and eventually the only one she keeps contact with.

As the Sumaderas are a highly traditional, proud, old money sort of family, her upbringing was very strict. She was raised with the sole purpose of succession essentially all her life and it definitely wasn't an enviable position. She didn't go to school, while her sister did. Instead, she's homeschooled, in the usual subjects from a biased point of view from tutors who are either part of the family, or approved by them. And, in unusual subjects as well, mostly by her mother or other important family members. Tea ceremony, flower arranging, kendo and music to go along with their traditional sensibilities. The family's way of doing business, shooting, family rules and accounts, to prepare her to lead.

The rules and nature of her childhood meant she hardly had one. There's no room for freetime for someone who has so much responsibility being pushed on them. Because the headship means so much responsibility, pressure, orders and expectations from elders, her mother wants to pass the title on as soon as she can. It's like the opposite of living vicariously through your children. The sooner she can push everything onto Kyrie, the sooner she can finally relax, as her life was almost certainly exactly the same way. Umineko has a great focus on cycles of bullying and resentment. Because A was pushed around, they resent B who did it to them, and take it out on C. C resents A and takes it out on D. D resents C and takes it out on E. That sort of thing.

Meanwhile, Kyrie has to watch as her younger sister is allowed to do as she pleases. She's certainly the favoured child, carefree and spoiled. And with a vicious nature, rubs it in Kyrie's face. While Kyrie must stay at home and learn to be the perfect head, Kasumi goes to school and out with friends, something Kyrie has no chance to have, if she would even be allowed to. Kasumi can date, and choose to marry whoever she likes, while Kyrie is given proposals for arranged marriages, which she finds as much reason to reject as she can. In addition, while Kasumi can dress however, Kyrie is confined to traditional clothing, to project the family's values.

Eventually, she goes off to university in Tokyo, to much protest. There she took business and met Rudolf, a classmate. Rudolf had made a pretty good business for himself which was basically a massive swindle selling party tickets at inflated prices and such, and hey Kyrie is up for illegal activity and money laundering, being yakuza and all, so she took an immediate liking to him. Rather not just a liking, but fell in love with him. She established herself as his business partner, using her own intelligence and connections to turn his little pocketmoney operation into a fullblown business. During this time they dated, but Rudolf was extremely popular with the ladies and often dated or slept with others as well. For the most part she didn't mind, as she thought she was secure in her position and the others were just distractions. But eventually one, Asumu, became a permanent girlfriend. Kyrie thought she had nothing to fear from Asumu, who seemed to be an idiot, but her vulnerability endeared her to Rudolf, and, when Asumu became pregnant, Rudolf married her.

Kyrie didn't realise she herself was pregnant as well until months into the pregnancy, after Rudolf and Asumu had married. When her mother found out, she disowned Kyrie and banished her from the family home. The only reason she wasn't killed was for fear of retalliation from the Ushiromiyas, as well as hope for monetary compensation from them. Kasumi was then forced to take over as the heir, calling off her engagement to the man of her choice in place of an arranged marriage Kyrie herself had originally rejected.

The two ended up giving birth on the same day, at nearly exactly the same time, and despite his wife being there as well, Rudolf went to Kyrie's delivery. Now here is where it gets complicated. Kyrie gave birth to Battler, while Asumu miscarried. However, because he and Asumu were already married, Rudolf couldn't simply leave her for Kyrie, it would break her heart twice over, to lose her child and then her husband, Asumu was delicate. Kyrie, on the other hand, was strong, she could handle losing a child, in fact, he thought it would be better for her to not be tied down, she would probably be relieved and could redeem herself with her family. And it certainly wouldn't be any good for Rudolf, as the son of a well-to-do family himself, to have a bastard child. So thinking it was the best solution for everyone, and without telling them, Rudolf paid the doctors to switch the babies, leading Kyrie to believe she had miscarried while Asumu had Battler.

Twelve years later, while Kyrie had continued to build a real business (though still using many highly illegal means largely thanks to Kyrie) with Rudolf, who still kept the secret of Battler's birth, Kyrie became pregnant again, and Asumu suddenly died. Rudolf and Kyrie married immediately after, and had a daughter, Ange, almost immediately after that. Because of this, it became clear that Rudolf had been cheating with Kyrie, and Battler left to live with his maternal grandparents.

Six years after the marriage, Battler finally returned to their family after his grandparents died. In that time, Kyrie would take Ange to visit Battler from time to time and built up a good relationship with him, though he still wouldn’t speak to his father. As a full family, there is still tension, but Ange is a common interest, and Kyrie tries to smooth things over. However, as Kyrie holds a grudge and secretly wishes harm on Battler as well, she did it mostly to look good in front of Rudolf and Ange.

At the family meeting on Rokkenjima, in EP7 Kyrie is shown to be the culprit. After the parents find the gold together, a fight breaks out, and Kyrie and Rudolf take advantage of the situation to subsequently murder those trapped on the island, one by one in order to take all the money for themselves. The great majority of it is Kyrie's doing - Rudolf only kills one after she pushes him to help out too, and she goes about it as if nothing was wrong. Eventually they're both shot and killed by Eva in retalliation.
